Minneapolis American Indian Center

Originally opened in 1975, the Minneapolis American Indian Center was one of the first urban American Indian Community Centers in the Nation. For 47 years, it served as the heart of the Minneapolis Tribal community for activities such as Powwows and sporting events.

To address and improve upon the aging facility, the MAIC team held planning sessions to figure out the best plan of action to best serve the community, which was decided to be a full remodel and addition of the existing building.
Designed by Full Circle Indigenous Planning & Design and Cuningham, the new facility features expanded public meeting spaces, a brand new fitness center, a community cafe and kitchen, an expanded art gallery, and floor plans emphasizing the importance of youth and elders to the center’s programming.

The Loeffler team was involved over several years as the center worked through a five-year, $30 Million capital fundraising campaign. Throughout the pre-design and conceptual phases, our team supported this project by providing detailed cost estimates to help the group understand what financing and design elements were within reach.
